The first British Beatle album. The ground was laid here for the worldwide phenomenon we know as
Beatlemania. What gets me is that 40 years later, we are STILL reaping the benefits of the 'four lads who
shook the world.' I seriously shudder to think what the world would be like without the Beatles.

You know the story . . . in Hamburg, 1962, The Beatles backed fellow Liverpudlian Tony Sheridan (billed as
the Beat Brothers). While waiting for Sheridan, the lads found themselves with some recording time and
recorded 'Ain't She Sweet' (John on lead) and the only Lennon-Harrison composition ever to be recorded:
the instrumental 'Cry for a Shadow.'

Having conquered the world, the boys had a go at film. Actually scripted before their first trip to America, it
was astonishingly prophetic. The wonder is that while filming, John and Paul wrote their strongest material
yet. Did their best work under pressure, I guess. Anyway, the soundtrack proper (as this is and the German
version) is just as exciting as the film itself.

America - the land of opportunity, especially when it comes to the almighty dollar. United Artists sprinkled
their soundtrack to The Beatles' first film with incidental and instrumental music. YAWN!!! Just what the kids
did NOT want! Skip this (unless you're a completist) and go with the British version, out on CD.

A bit mellower than what we were used to, but also a breath of fresh air. This despite the glum look of the

The Beatles' second film, and one I truly love. I think the irreverence and ad-libbing make an ordinary spy
spoof really enjoyable. Even if the boys hated it and were stoned for the duration. Plus the music is
unbelievable. Starting to steer away from the bubblegum boy-meets-girl songs and becoming more
introspective and experimental with instrumental and production.

Some absolutely love this album. I'm not a big fan of the record since it really chronicles the break-up of the
best and most talented group the world has ever, or will ever, know. Basically a solo album of all the guys.
Rarely do all of them play on the same tracks. George even brought Eric Clapton in to play the lead on
'While My Guitar Gently Weeps.' Paul does his acoustic thing while John gets more heavily into Yoko and
heroin. And poor Ringo - he quit the band during the recording but was luckily persuaded to come back. I
mean, there are great songs on it, and I grow to like it more every year, but I can't get over the feeling that
I'm listening to a band disintegrate.

Fulfilling their commitment to UA for a third film, The Beatles commissioned this animated classic. Okay,
so none of the guys lent their voices to the project and only appear in a two-minute live action clip at the end
of the film. Still, the music is superb (even if two tracks were reissues and the rest were throwaways),
especially George's contributions. The second side is George Martin composed incidental music used in
the film. (Apple Records released a 'Songtrack' in 2000, but I'm sticking with the original.)

In chronological recording order, this is the last Beatles' album produced and released while the band was
still together. An attempt to 'make records like we used to' (Paul), you can tell from start to finish that this
was a labour of love for the lads. George proved he could write as good as John and Paul; Ringo's
drumming was FINALLY given the credit (and respect) that was long overdue; John indulged in his primal,
gut wrenching rock and roll; and Paul masterfully constructed the pop opera suite on side 2, with some of the
best writing he's done. Abbey Road is truly, in every sense of the word, a classic.

Never-say-die Capitol Records had one more re-issue in them. Knowing that The Beatles' days were

The first official live Beatles album released ever, and what a historic chronicle it is! Essentially a bootleg,
this truly captures the Beatles experience before Beatlemania. Oddly enough, Pete Best is not on this

there is no live recording of the Beatles with Pete Best (that I'm aware of).

In 1977, there was a huge Beatles resurgence. Talk of the 1976 reunion concert had passed into lore by
now, but Capitol Records decided to cash in on the growing interest of the Fab Four and released this live
album. One side recorded in 1964, the other on the 1965 tour, we finally had a professionally produced
live album at the height of Beatlemania. A splendid time was guaranteed for all.

Fanning the flames of excitement surrounding the impending release of The Beatles Anthology in 1995,
Apple released this gem. Really just a professionally produced version of The Beatles at the Beeb, but
without the annoying commercials.

Christmas Time (Is Here Again)
An historic occasion, indeed. The first all-new music from The Beatles in 25 years! Taking a demo of one
of John's songs and adding to the arrangement, "the Threetles" (as the British press dubbed the
surviving members) convened at George's house to record this and one other song, with Jeff Lynne
(ELO) producing. I never thought I'd live to see the day of a new Beatles record. Oh, did I mention that the
record debuted in the number one position in the charts all over the world? Let's see somebody else try that.

A painstaking collection of unreleased and alternative tracks spanning the first third of The Beatles' career.
Also includes studio chatter, which with any other band would be extremely boring and self-serving, but not
The Beatles. We finally get to see what it was like to be there.

Here, There and Everywhere
The second single of all-new material to be released by The Beatles! And again, the song went to number
one all over the world upon its release. Another demo of John's, this was lighter and happier that 'Free as a
Bird.' This really evoked the spirit of The Beatles (circa 1966-67) to me. I was lucky enough to be in London
when this was released and it took my breath away to hear a brand new Beatles song on the radio in
London. That's one memory I'll never forget!

tunes to the more psychedelic songs.

According to Paul, there was to be a third Lennon-penned demo that the boys were going to record but
George didn't like the song so it was scrapped. Funny how even 25 years apart couldn't mend the rifts
completely between George and Paul. Still, perhaps George was right - if the song wasn't up to snuff and
they released it anyway, it could've been seen as a cheap shot at capitalizing on The Beatles' name.
Anyway, this collection covers the last phase of The Beatles career. We can only guess as to what's to
come.

One of the notorious Beatles' legends is that Paul was never satisfied with Phil Spector's production job
on Let it Be. In fact, he was downright furious! Strings, female vocals and the like on a Beatles' album! To
give Paul his due, the point they were trying to make with Get Back (as it was originally called) was that if
you stripped away the studio augmentation, you'd have one great little rock 'n' roll band. Paul finally got his
way with this release, stripped of that augmentation and re-sequenced in its original order. Why they didn't
just call it Get Back is beyond me, though.

All You Need is Love
Before George Harrison died, he had the brainchild of putting George Martin in charge of re-imagining
many Beatles classics for this show to be performed by Cirque de Soleil. Five years after his passing, it
finally came true. Many die-hard Beatlemaniacs hated this album, calling it sacrilege. I loved it! What better
way to celebrate the brilliance of the Beatles than to spotlight their songs in a fresh and exciting new way?
As they broke new ground in the 60's, The Beatles continue to break new ground in the 21st Century. The
perfect mash disc!
