Teen angst, suicide, drug abuse . . . these are topics for the young? Hell, yes! With this record, Cheap Trick
solidified their place in the rock 'n' roll pantheon. Touching on subjects that were so in tune with their
audience (teenagers), CT never pandered or talked down to their listeners. Intelligent, strongly-crafted
Power Pop before there was even a name for it. THIS is why Cheap Trick is so great - and it all came
together on Heaven Tonight.

As with millions of fans, this is the one that started it all for me. I'll never forget hearing 'Ain't That a Shame'
on the car radio and feeling that something new and wonderful was opening up to me. There is no other
American band that is better than Cheap Trick. Only selling out once (see Lap of Luxury), and
condemning the action ever since, Cheap Trick has consistently cranked out the very best in Rock 'n' Roll.
Hits? We don't need no stinking hits! We need Cheap Trick!

Epic tried to cash in on the New Wave scene by releasing these 'Nu-Disk's, or 10 inch EP's. And to get the
ball rolling, they decided to use their hottest act at the moment - Cheap Trick (four were released in all: New
Musik
, The Continentals, Propaganda, and CT - I have all of them!). Great songs, great collectors' items.

Bass player Tom Petersson took a powder after this record was finished. Didn't even hang around for the
tour (replaced by Pete Comita, who was replaced by Jon Brant in 1982). Apparently, his wife at the time
talked him into being her svengali so he left Cheap Trick. Produced by George Martin, this is unlike any
CT record before or since. Very experimental, yet highly Power Pop, it smacked of New Wave. I love to see
bands experiment and explore, and I loved this record. Unfortunately, there was no single as far as Epic was
concerned, so the album tanked. (Interesting note: if you splice the beginning of 'Stop This Game' onto the
end of The Beatles' 'A Day in the Life,' they blend together almost seamlessly. Coincidence? With George
Martin producing both? I don't think so - I think it was a clever homage to CT's heroes.)

Another album, another producer. This time, Roy Thomas Baker (Queen) put his touch on the CT sound.
Result? Very grungey, a full decade before that genre existed. Overproduced (in my opinion), the songs still
shine through. And anytime a CT album has a hit single, I love it. And this one had two! ('If You Want My
Love' and' She's Tight.')

Their best albumof the 80s, Epic Records left the boys out to dry. Great songs, catchy single ('Tonight It's
You'), and cool video . . . and no promotion whatsoever. The label sent them out on tour as the opening act
for Heart (?!). The opening act?!?!?!? Unfortunately, the boys would never rebound commercially from this
blatant miscarriage of justice. As for the record - you're no CT fan if you don't have this record.

The true mark of a Cheap Trick fan is the ownership (and fondness) of this record. Highly uncommercial,
highly original, and still stands up after all these years even with the cheesy mid-80s production. Great songs
depsite being forced to lean on the untalented & homogenized songwriting team of Billy Steinberg & Tom
Kelly
(for 'Kiss Me Red') by the record company. Epic's plan of ruining the greatest American rock band of
all time would come to fruition on their next official release in 1988. But for now, the defiance of Cheap
Trick was victorious.

It had to happen! Even the mighty CT bowed under pressure form the record company and released this
mess. But even CT can make crap sound good. Example: 'The Flame.' A horrible song they were forced to
do, and they hated it from the first note. Of course, it became their only Number One single, which I credit to
CT's talent and handling of this song, certainly not to the writing.

After the debacle that was Lap of Luxury, CT came back with a very good album. Not great, but very good.
Epic Records, in their infinite 'wisdom,' wanted to copy the success of 'The Flame,' so they ordered the
band to do a Diane Warren (Ugh!!!!!) song - 'Wherever Would I Be.' And, of course, in inimitable Cheap
Trick
style, they do a great job on a horrible tune. Luckily, this was the only downside to an otherwise good
effort. Plus, any cover of The Move is always cool ('Rock 'n' Roll Tonite')!

Epic raided their vaults, trying to milk the last drop they could out of Cheap Trick, after CT was let out of

even countered by releasing the entire Budokan concert (the first album and this one) in one package.

Amazingly, Epic Records put out a fantastic box set, full of alternate and live versions of classic CT songs,
plus a plethora of unreleased material. The liner notes are VERY cool, too. Unfortunately, the set ends
around 1990, when Epic released the band from its contract. I'm sure there's plenty of unreleased 90s era
Trick that's just dying to be heard. That'll be the next box set then.
